Kohima, August 15 (MExN): Expressing concern over the unprecedented monsoon rains that triggered widespread landslides and flash floods across several districts of Nagaland, Chief Minister Dr Neiphiu Rio on Saturday said the state government has been undertaking large-scale rescue and relief operations, even as an Inter-Ministerial Central Team has visited to assess the damage.
In his address to the people on the occasion of the 80th Independence Day celebrations in Kohima, Dr Rio said the recent relentless rainfall caused extensive damage to houses, properties, and public infrastructure, besides resulting in loss of lives and injuries to many, particularly in Mon district.
“The disasters resulted in loss of lives and injuries to many people, especially in Mon district, besides causing extensive damage to houses, properties and public infrastructure,” the CM said, while conveying heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and wishing a speedy recovery to the injured.
Dr Rio informed that the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) and district administrations have been actively engaged in rescue, relief, and restoration works across the affected areas.
He also disclosed that an Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT) from the Ministry of Home Affairs had recently visited the state to assess the extent of the damage and facilitate necessary support for recovery and rehabilitation.
Reiterating the government’s commitment, Dr Rio assured that all possible assistance would be extended to affected communities, and stressed that restoration of damaged infrastructure and essential connectivity remains a top priority in the aftermath of the monsoon disasters.
