Kohima, January 6 (MExN):  Major General Vikas Lakhera, SM assumed the command of the Inspector General Assam Rifles (North) on January 5. 

He took over the charge from previous IGAR, Maj Gen Viresh Pratap Singh Kaushik.

A press release from PRO, HQ IGAR (N) informed that Maj Gen Lakhera was commissioned into the Sikh Light Infantry Regiment on June 9, 1990, which he later went on to command in Lower Assam. He also commanded an Infantry Brigade at Sriganganagar, before moving to HQ 4 Corps as Brigadier. 

He is post graduate from Defence Services Staff College, Wellington and also attended the National Defence College Course at Royal College of Defence Studies (RCDS), London in the United Kingdom. 

The General Officer has “immense operational experience in planning and conduct of Counter Terrorist operations in Jammu & Kashmir and Assam including a previous tenure prior to the Ceasetime in Nagaland,” the release maintained.  

He is a highly decorated Officer and has to his credit a Sena Medal, Chief of Army Staff Commendation Card and two GOC-in-C Commendation Cards, it added.
