In a major drug haul, at least six people were arrested with drugs worth over Rs 20 crore at Sailulak village in Serchhip district on the Mizoram- Myanmar border on Wednesday night, sources said on Thursday.
This is the biggest drug haul ever made in the state, according to Mizoram police.
The police said that volunteers of Young Mizo Association (YMA) and Village Council members of Sailulak intercepted a mini truck coming from Myanmar side on Wednesday night around 7:30 and recovered six lakh tablets of Methamphetamine concealed in six bags of chilli.
Six suspected peddlers, all of them from Assam, were caught by the local leaders in connection with the seizure, the police said. They were handed over to Excise and Narcotics department and police the same night.
The prime accused NB Sujit Uddin, (23), a resident of Silchar in Assam’s Cachar district told police that the contraband belonged to Liani of Tahan in Myanmar.
Uddin has rented a house at Sailulak and was engaged in pepper trade at Sailulak and neighbouring villages and also in Myanmar villages.
Sailulak is located on the Mizoram-Myanmar border.
On Wednesday, Uddin had gone to Tiau river to collect red chilli, which he bought from Dawntlang village in Myanmar, by hiring a mini truck. But he had to return to Sailulak due to road block caused by landslides. In the evening, he hired an earth excavator from nearby village and went to Tiau again.
Being suspicious about his activity, the YMA volunteers and local leaders intercepted his vehicle and recovered six bags of Meth tablets.
Officials of Excise and Narcotics department and police from Vanlaiphai town rushed to the village on the same night and arrested the six accused along with the contraband goods. They were sent to Serchhip police station on Thursday, the police said.
Sources from Sailulak said that there is no police or Forest check post at the village despite its proximity to Myanmar.
