Manipur: 3 women hurt in pre-poll violence

Newmai News Network Imphal | February 2   At least three women were injured when police fired tear gas shells in their attempt to control clashes between supporters of two aspiring candidates, including a Congress MLA, in Thoubal district on Thursday.   Supporters of MLA K Meghachandra were holding a flag hoisting function when the pre-poll violence took place at Thoubal Kiyam under Wangkhem constituency.   Among the injured, one has been referred to RIMS hospital here while the other two are being treated at Thoubal District Hospital.Four vehicles were also damaged in the incident.   Meanwhile, a campaign rally of Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh attracted large crowds at Thoubal Ningombam of Thoubal district.   With only one month left for the first phase of Manipur assembly polls, the campaign has reached fever pitched across Thoubal, the home turf of the three-time Congress Chief Minister.   The Congress is preparing to announce its candidate list in one go tomorrow for the two-phase Manipur assembly polls to be held on March 4 and 8. The Manipur Congress is fielding candidates in all the 60 constituencies in the forthcoming polls.   A meeting of the Screening Committee of Congress is expected to take place tomorrow in New Delhi and after that the party's Election Committee headed by Sonia Gandhi is likely to finalise the candidate list for the Manipur election. The BJP has already announced 31 candidates in the first list for the Manipur election and the second last is expected to release in the next two-three days.
