Manipur collects swab samples of as many as 200 police personnel

The Manipur Health department has collected swab samples of as many as 200 police personnel to test for COVID-19 after one of the personnel was tested positive for the virus.


Official sources said that the samples have been sent to VRDLs in Imphal for testing and the results are awaited.


An assistant sub-inspector (ASI) posted at Jiribam Police Station of Jiribam district bordering Assam was tested positive for COVID-19 on June 30.


Besides, ASI was discharging his duty at the Jiribam railway station where special trains ferrying stranded people arrive.

 

He has a travel history of visiting Silchar of Assam in the recent time. He was the first among the police personnel in Manipur on COVID-19 duty infected by the virus and was seventh persons among the frontline COVID-19 warriors contracted by the virus in the State.


Earlier, two doctors, four nurses, one volunteer of catering service at quarantine centres had tested positive for the virus. 


Meanwhile, following the confirmation of the test, the Jiribam administration had, on Wednesday, declared the Jiribam police station as a containment zone along with Babupara ward no. 5 and areas in Kadamtala as containment zones.


The containment area included the locality of the ASI. Samples of his family members and close relatives had also collected for testing for the virus, the official source said.
