Massive traffic jams hit parts of Imphal today amid a protest march organized by Congress party against the detention of AICC General Secretary, Priyanka Gandhi in Uttar Pradesh.

The Congress staged the protest as a part of the party’s nationwide protest against the detention of the AICC leader on her way to Uttar Pradesh's Lakhimpur Kheri.

AICC leaders Jairam Ramesh and Bhakta Charan Das, who were camping in Imphal, Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) President N Loken and other opposition MLAs were among the large number of supporters who staged the protest in Imphal.

The rally started from Imphal Congress Bhavan and marched toward Western Gate of Kangla fort along the congested BT Road. After returning from there, they staged a protest owing to which a massive traffic jam was witnessed until police intervened.

After a brief chaos, the police pushed the protesters inside the Congress Bhavan. However, traffic chaos was also reported in other places of Imphal for around half an hour by the impact of the traffic jam.

Congress staged the protest demanding unconditional release of the AICC general secretary who is also in-charge of UP.

Talking to reporters in Imphal, AICC (Manipur-in-charge) Bhakta Charan Das demanded immediate release of Priyanka while strongly condemning the detention. He said that the UP government and BJP should be held responsible for the Lakhimpur Kheri incident, while demanding immediate arrest of the accused.

He alleged that the detention of the AICC leader is not justifiable. The detention of Priyanka is not an act of a democratic government, he added. “Why are they detaining our leader while they could not take action against the perpetrators of the incident?" Das asked.

He said that Congress organized the nation-wide protest demanding an apology from the Prime Minister to the farmers during his visit to Lucknow today.
