Chüthuni, the premier festival of the Mao community, was celebrated with traditional fervour organised by the Mao Union Kohima at Naga Solidarity Park, Kohima on January 7.

Observed under the theme “Treasuring traditions, celebrating identity,” Chüthuni marks a season of thanksgiving and communal celebration, reflecting on the achievements of the past year while reaffirming and honouring the community’s rich cultural heritage.

The festival is traditionally observed over five days viz. Nisha, Nijii, Oshu Kope and Oni Kono - each day carrying its own cultural and social significance.

Speaking as the celebration guest, Hielievio Solo, Chairman Kohima Village Council reminded that being family, at times differences arise, however, asserted that it shouldn’t weaken ‘our’ resilience and support for each other.

Festivals, an integral part of the Naga’s rich cultural heritage, serve as a powerful medium for preserving traditions and fostering social unity, he said, describing them as living expressions of a community’s identity and history that connect the past with the present and the future.

“Festivals are more than just an occasion for celebrations but also strengthening the social bonds connecting people to their roots and values” Solo added, and extending gratitude the Mao community for their hospitality and cordiality extended to the Angami community.

Highlighting the importance of culture, tradition and shared values that bind the community together, President of Mao Union Kohima (MUK), E Krelo urged everyone to carry the message of peace, respect and kindness in everyday live.

He expressed gratitude to the Angami community, particularly the Kohima village for their continued support describing them as ‘our guardian’ who has stood by the Mao community through thick and thin.

“You have guided us, corrected us and understood us,” Krelo maintained and assured that the Mao community of Kohima will continue to extend its full cooperation in whatever little capacity it has in the days to come.

Appreciating the Mao community as ‘peace loving community’ MLA Dr Tseilhoutuo Rhetso said, the Angamis in particular and the Nagas in general must learn the ways of surviving beyond borders.

Noting that the community has made significant contributions and continues to play a leading role in day-to-day life, administration, business and politics in Manipur, he added, “We are happy to have you as part of us in this capital city of Nagaland.”

To this end, Dr Rhetso urged the community to continue their positive role in fostering development and a peaceful environment in the capital town.

The festival also saw presentation of folk song, folk dance, Chüthuni blessings by R Lokho and Chüthuni feast.
