Martyrs’ Memorial Park dedicated in Kohima

Kohima, January 31 (MExN): The first death anniversary of Khriesavizo Metha and Bendangnungsang Longkumer, the two youth who were killed when police opened fire during a protest against the ULB elections in Dimapur last year, was held on January 31 along with the dedication of a memorial monument. The memorial is located at the Old Secretariat Complex Kohima and is now named as Martyrs’ Memorial Park.

“Our brothers have set an example to walk with truth and justice and not with money power or gun power. Let peace and unity be among us,” said Ruopfükhrienuo speaking on behalf of Khriesavizo’s family. He also informed that their father who was supposed to speak had passed away on January 10 this year.

Thejao Vihienuo, who also spoke on behalf of the family of Khriesavizo, expressed that it is in pursuit of a cause which Nagas and Naga youth hold dear that the two youth had given their lives. Vihienuo viewed that the movement has not died and added, “To us, this sacrifice is only the beginning of the movement.”

“This memorial stands to witness a movement against deceit and betrayal that has become so blatant in Naga society. Let no one betray and belie the hope and aspiration of our youth,” affirmed Vihienuo who urged the leaders present to “make the sacrifice bear fruit.”   Merenchiba Longkumer spoke on behalf of the family of Bendangnungsang.

Speeches were also delivered by the Diphupar Naga Youth Organisation, JCC, NTAC and Angami Public Organisation. Dr. Vilhusa Seleyi, Advisor, APO noted that the death of the two youth has brought the Nagas closer and instilled a sense of unity.   KT Vilie, Convenor, NTAC meanwhile updated on the construction of the memorial which was designed by Architect Visato Sale. A tribute song called ‘On a late Tuesday evening’ was also presented by the Diphupar Naga Youth Organisation.
