Meghalaya legislator calls for official resolution for inclusion of Khasi in 8th Schedule

Newmai News Network SHILLONG | SEPTEMBER 21   Pressing home his demand for the inclusion of the Khasi language in the 8th Schedule of the Constitution of India, the Congress MLA representing Mawlai constituency, Process Sawkmie has asked the state government of Meghalaya to bring out an official resolution to urge the Centre to meet this demand.   During the first day of the Assembly session here on Friday, Sawkmie raised a point of order to make the demand which also interrupted the chief minister Conrad K Sangma, while he was introducing important Bills in the House.   “I urge the state government to bring an official resolution both for Khasi and Garo language during this current session,” he said.   According to him, a big rally called by the Khasi Authors Society (KAS) will be held in the state capital on Saturday.   However, Conrad, who did not give any assurance on the matter, told the opposition member that he should understand how the procedure (of raising point of order) follows since the time allotted at the moment was only for government business.   “You (Sawkmie) have to have a point to raise the point of order but there is no point. The member must realise the procedure how it follows, right now we are in government business and we are discussing important issues, there will be time to discuss the issue he has raised which is also important but right now we are in the process of introducing Bills. I think he should understand that,” Conrad said.   Earlier, the Speaker assured the request of the opposition member will be examined and it will later be decided how much time will be allotted to discuss the various important issues to be raised during the session.
