One person was arrested by Meghalaya Police today for his alleged involvement in planting an IED in front of the National People's Party (NPP) office even as Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma has assured to provide enough security to all candidates of different political parties contesting the upcoming by-elections to the three Assembly seats slated for October 30.
Speaking to media persons, Sangma said that one arrest has been made and police are interrogating the accused person. "More development is unfolding as we speak," he said while adding the more details will be given once the government gets the entire report.
The banned Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) had claimed responsibility for planting the IED in the NPP office on Monday.
On such threats having an impact in the upcoming by-election, the Chief Minister said that the government is not taking the matter lightly.
"You see every threat that is there, every aspect and challenge we face is important, we cannot take it lightly but we are sure with the work that the agencies are doing right now, the work that the police are doing right now, we should be able to normalize the situation to large extent and we don't expect any kind of serious threat in this situation," he added.
Sangma further assured that all measures will be taken to ensure all candidates of different political parties are given enough security.
On the outfit threatening to shoot ministers of the MDA government, the Chief Minister said, "As I said the threat may be there but the agencies are doing their work. We are ensuring that no such threat or no such incidents will occur and we are confident that all steps will be taken to ensure all our people are protected."
