Meghalaya's COVID-19 toll surpasses 1000-mark, 558 new cases detected

Shillong, July 23 (PTI): The COVID-19 toll in Meghalaya breached the 1000-mark on Friday as 21 more succumbed to the disease, pushing the total number of fatalities to 1,009, while 558 new cases raised the tally to 59,904, a senior official said.

The number of active cases in the state stands at 4,539, Health Services Director Aman War said.

At least 54,356 people have recovered from the disease so far, including 411 since Thursday.

Of the 558 new cases, 223 were registered in East Khasi Hills and 115 in West Jaintia Hills, War said.

Twelve fresh fatalities were also reported from East Khasi Hills, followed by two each from West Garo Hills, West Jaintia Hills and West Khasi Hills, and one each from Ri Bhoi, South Garo Hills and South West Garo Hills.

Over 7.95 lakh sample tests have been conducted in the northeastern state till date.

As many as 9.66 lakh people have been inoculated with COVID-19 vaccines thus far, with at least 1,49,451 of them having received both the doses, War added.
