
Dimapur, September 25 (MExN): Meriema Village Council decries the killing of a person during a gunfight between unidentified gunmen and the Assam Rifles on September 19 at Lierie in Kohima.
The deceased, one Kelhouba, reported to be a former pastor, was a citizen of Meriema village “who voluntarily resigned from the pastorship in the month of March 2009 on health ground,” the council said in a note today. “He was a father and a husband. His involvement with any faction or group could not be established by the village council as well as the family members,” the Mereima council stated.
“It was regrettable that such incident occurred during the time when the Nagas were striving for reconciliation as well as the ceasefire and the peace process between the Nagas and the Government of India were at a crucial stage. The village council has therefore called upon all the right thinking citizen to come forward and condemn such a violent act,” the council said.
The village council also requests the government to investigate and “bring out the truth as to why and how late Kelhouba got killed and to book the guilty at the earliest.”
