Newmai News Network Imphal|September 21 Troubles have returned in Manipur University as the police picked up and detained about 90 students after a midnight raid at the men’s Hostel of the varsity. The police raided the hostel after the Pro-Vice Chancellor of the University; K Yogindro Singh reportedly lodged a complaint at a police station in Imphal alleging that the students of the university assaulted him. K Yogindro Singh was appointed as the Pro-Vice Chancellor after Prof A P Pandey was suspended by the authority last week as the students and teachers of the varsity continued to demand his ousting. According to sources, the police personnel in large number swoop down in the men’s hostel in the Manipur University Campus at around 1 am and raided the hostel. The police personnel were reported to have come with a long list of students and teachers. The sources said that five to six faculty members of the university have also been detained in the police custody. Following this incident, security measures have been tightened in the state capital Imphal as preemptive steps. At the time of filing this report, it is learnt that those persons who have been picked up by the police last night are still in the police custody. It can be noted here that Manipur University Staff Association (MUSA), Manipur University Teachers’ Association (MUTA) and Manipur University Student Union (MUSU) lifted agitation after 85 days owing to the August 16 agreement. According to that agreement, Prof AP Pandey was supposed to be on leave during the enquiry period. The MUSA, MUTA and MUSU had protested for 85 days demanding enquiry into the “administrative and financial irregularities” in the management of the University under Prof A P Pandey. The three organizations also accused Prof A P Pandey, Vice Chancellor of the varsity of taking frequent leave.
