Minor sexually assaulted in Mon

Two youths were arrested by the Mon police in connection to an alleged rape of a 15 year-old girl in Mon. The incident occurred on June 20 and the two suspects were arrested after a complaint was filed by the victim’s family today.  

According to the Mon police, the incident occurred some 4km from Aboi town when two young girls were reportedly waylaid by a group of six youths sometime before noon on Sunday. Citing preliminary findings, a Mon police official said that the one of the girls, a 15 year-old, was sexually assaulted, while the other, said to be a 14 year-old, managed to escape, and informed relatives.  

The complaint was filed today following which two suspects were arrested from a neighbouring village. 

“As per the complaint, six youngsters were involved. Their identities cannot be disclosed at this stage for a lack of certainty about their age,” said a Mon police official. 

The official added that further details will be provided as and when the other suspects are arrested and their age ascertained. 

Reacting to the incident, civil organizations in Mon demanded the immediate arrest of the perpetrators. A joint press statement issued by the Konyak Union, Aboi; Aboi Area Students’ Union; Konyak Nyupuh Sheko Khong (KNSK) Aboi and Aboi Town Students’ Union, while condemning the act, called for the arrest of “six persons, who were directly and indirectly involved.” 

The statement said, “The general public and the NGOs of Aboi warns that the accused should not be bailed at any cost since their act was heinous and inhumane.”
