
Aizawl, April 27 (NNN): An 11-hour bandh was called on Friday in four Mizoram constituencies by Saitual District Implementing Demand Committee (SDIDC) in Saitual area, demanding the implementation of Saitual as a full-fledged district. Saitual presently falls under Aizawl district. The bandh, observed from 5:00 am to 4:00 pm, received strong support from the public as it was observed strictly in the entire demand area, sources from Saitual said. No untoward incident occurred during the day long shutdown, police said. The 11-hour strike affected normal life as all government offices, educational institutions and business establishment remained closed. Vehicles too stayed off the road and most residents also stayed indoor to show solidarity to the SDIDC. SDIDC chairman Rohmingliana said the Committee has been demanding the creation of Saitual district for 44 years since 1974, 34 years before the Mizo National Front (MNF) government announced its creation in 2008. He said that Saitual has all the pre-requisites to be a full-fledged district. The Committee also submitted memorandum to the state government through Saitual Sub-Divisional Officer (Civil) R. Vanlalsawma, demanding immediate implementation of Saitual as full-fledged district. It further urged the state government to expedite road construction between Dilkhan and Khanpui and to do black topping of road between Saitual and Saichal before monsoon. The state government was also asked to immediately install and station deputy commissioner in Saitual and complete the construction of Tuirini bridge, which is the life-line of northeast Mizoram, before rainy season.
