Mizoram reports 725 new COVID-19 cases, 1 more death

Aizawl, July 21 (PTI): Mizoram's COVID-19 tally surged to 29,020 as 725 more people including 138 children tested positive for the virus in the last 24 hours, pushing the state's tally to 29,020, a health department official said on Wednesday.

The single-day positivity rate rose to 16 per cent from 10.85 per cent on Tuesday, the official said.

The COVID-19 death toll in the state climbed to 126 as a 73-year-old man from Aizawl succumbed to the infection at Zoram Medical College (ZMC) on Tuesday night .

Of the fresh COVID-19 cases, 111 were detected during mass testing drive held in six localities or pockets within Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC) area, he said.

Forty-four cases were confirmed through RT-PCR test, while 647 cases were detected through Rapid Antigen Test and the remaining 34 cases were detected through TrueNat test, he said.

Aizawl district reported the highest number of fresh cases at 461, followed by Kolasib (116), Lunglei (72), Mamit (33), Lawngtlai (25), Siaha (16) and Serchhip (2).

At least 342 patients were diagnosed during contact tracing, he said, adding that 651 patients have developed symptoms of COVID-19.

Mizoram now has 6,833 active COVID-19 cases, while 22,061 people have recovered from the infection, including 373 on Tuesday, he said.

The northeastern state has tested over 5.69 lakh samples for COVID-19, including 4,530 in the last 24 hours. The COVID-19 recovery rate is now 76 per cent and death rate is 0.43 per cent.

According to state Immunisation officer Dr Lalzawmi, over 6.11 lakh people have been inoculated till Tuesday.
