Mizoram students demand immediate appointment of regular VC, threaten agitation

Newmai News Network Aizawl | August 28 Mizoram University Students’ Council (MZUSC) on Monday demanded the Centre to immediately appoint regular Vice Chancellor (VC) of Mizoram University (MZU) and threatened to launch agitation by boycotting all classes and non-academic activities if its demand is not met before September 5. In a representation/letter addressed to Union Human Resource Development minister Prakash Javadekar, the MZUSC said that the Mizoram University has been without regular VC for almost two years and a number of requests had been made to the authorities by the students as well as the teachers’ association for immediate appointment of regular VC which were paid unheeded by the Centre. “Till now, all the requests have found to be meaningless as regular VC has not been appointed yet despite interaction/interview for short-listed candidates being held more than three months ago,” the student body informed the Union minister through the representation. It said that the absence of regular VC for a long time has not only severely affected all employees and students, but also adversely affected the overall academic functioning. Taking the indifference to their repeated appeals for immediate appointment of VC as an insult to the students, the MZUSC which represent all the student communities of the varsity said in its letter that it did not find any significant reason for continuing academic activities without regular VC and threatened to launch an agitation by boycotting classes and picketing all teaching and non teaching staffs if its demand for immediate appointment of regular VC is not met before September 5. A copy of the letter was also sent to President of India Ram Nath Kovind, who is MZU Visitor, Mizoram Governor Lt. Gen. (Rtd) Nirbhay Sharma, Mizoram Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla, two MPs from Mizoram CL Ruala and Ronald Sapa Tlau and other concerned officers.
