Mkg observes world population day

Mokokchung, July 12 (MExN): Along with the rest of the world, the District Health Society, Mokokchung also observed the World Population day at the ISDP Conference Hall at the Dr Imkongliba Memorial Hospital on Monday, July 11 under the theme ‘Small Family: Overall Development’.
The SDO (Civil) of Mokokchung Nungsangmenla was a special guest at the programme which was attended by doctors, nurses, NGO workers, health department officials and community leaders. The Associates for Performing Arts & Theatricals performed a short skit about family planning at the programme.
Delivering the keynote address, Senior Dental Surgeon Dr N Moa Jamir highlighted the significance of the day and said that the World Population Day aims to increase people’s awareness on various population issues such as the importance of family planning, including gender equality, poverty, maternal health and human rights.
Saying that world leaders proclaimed that individuals had a basic human right to determine freely and responsibly the number and timing of their children, Dr Moa however said that modern contraception remains out of reach for millions of women, men and young people even after forty years later.
Informing that Nagaland is also observing the WPD with the theme ‘Small Family: Overall Development’ all over the state, Dr Moa maintained that ‘every citizen has a responsibility to achieve this foal working together’.
Disclosing estimates that the population of India by 2026 is expected to be around 1.40 billion, Dr Moa said maintained that the different agencies or departments directly dealing with this global burning issue should be more committed and sensitive towards the issue and work more harder in their assigned responsibility to save our land in particular and the whole world in general for future generation.
The SDO (C) Nungsangmenla while delivering a short speech appreciated the doctors, nurses and those involved in educating the public about the importance of family planning in the society. She also assured all support and logistical help from the district administration to the District Health Society, Mokokchung while carrying out their family planning programmes. Later the SDO (C) launched the Population Stabilization Fortnight at the IMDH which will be observed from July 11 to 24, 2011. During this fortnight, free sterilization of both men and women and ‘Copper T’ INSERT IGNOREion will be conducted at the hospital. Those willing to go for sterilization programme can avail the free services during the forthnight, disclosed an official.
