Mobike thief finally arrested

DIMAPUR, March 11 (MExN): Dimapur police finally managed to nab one member of a gang of motorcycle-riding thieves that has been menacing the town for a while. The thief identified as one Avinash Singh alias Biren Singh (23 years) was caught on March 5 last outside the State Bank of India, Bazaar Branch, located at the Dhobinullah intersection.
The delayed information was received today, through a press release from the Additional Superintendent of Police, Dimapur.  The release stated that Singh was arrested when he alongwith two other accomplices were planning to rob unsuspecting targets outside the SBI, Bazaar Branch. The arrested is originally of Patharpukhur under Rajganj Police station, Jalpaiguri district, West Bengal.
During interrogation it was revealed that Singh alongwith three others had come to Dimapur on the last week of January this year with the motive of committing robbery. His partners in crime were identified as one Kamal Singh (25 years), a Pintu Roy (21 years) and one Akash Singh (23 years) all hailing from Patharpukhur. The latter three are still absconding, the release stated.
The gang’s modus operandi was to seek out bank customers, usually women, who were either depositing or withdrawing cash. One of the accused would enter a bank and observe the transactions taking place while two others will lay in wait on a motor-cycle outside. After locating a ‘soft target’, information would be relayed to the two waiting outside, passing on the description of the target through mobile phone. Thereafter, the motor-cycle duo would trail the target looking for an opportune moment. They would then startle the unsuspecting target while instantly grabbing hold of the bag containing cash and make their getaway. They used a black ‘Pulsar’ two-wheeler and made good their escape, crossing the border into Assam, the release added. Other details of the said bike used during the crimes were not provided.
“The accused have admitted that between February and March 2011 the gang had snatched money amounting to Rs. 11, 00, 000; three ATM cards and one mobile phone from different victims.”
The arrested further admitted to being involved in three similar crimes which the gang has committed on February 1, February 28 and March 2 in Dimapur. During the first such incident, the thieves had robbed a woman of of Rs. one lakh in cash, at River Belt Colony, near Don Bosco Higher Secondary School. The woman had withdrawn the money from the HDFC Bank. The second incident on February 28 occurred near the ICICI Bank, wherein, another woman was robbed of Rs. 2.5 lakh in cash. An equal amount was robbed by the same gang on March 2 from a woman who was coming out of the Vijaya Bank.
The arrested stated that the gang operated from a hotel in Sukanjan under Bokajan, Karbi Anglong. The name of the hotel is said to be one ‘Hotel Priyanka’. “BY the time the Hotel was raided the other accomplices had managed to escape. Efforts are on to arrest the other members of the gang and bring the culprits to book for their crimes,” the release from the ASP avowed.
In hiding kidnapping accused surrenders to police
One of the suspects involved in the kidnapping of two Jorhat based businessmen from Dimapur on December 8, 2010 has surrendered to the police.  “The accused identified as Mr. Alato, reportedly the Auditor General of the SKK surrendered at the East Police Station after obtaining Anticipatory Bail from the Court”, a press note from the ASP stated. He was said to be in hiding for more than two months. The date of the surrender and when the bail was obtained was not specified. “Reportedly, the accused is one of the key masterminds of the abduction. The victims were confined at his residence in Notun Basti and was instrumental in negotiating the ransom money with the relatives of the abductees. Further investigation into the case is going on.”
