MOKOKCHUNG, JANUARY 31 (MExN): The Mokokchung Forest Division, under the Forest and Biodiversity Management Project (FBMP), conducted a one-day exposure trip for villagers from Batch-2 project areas on Tuesday. The initiative, co-financed by the German Development Bank (KfW), aims to promote sustainable forest management and biodiversity conservation in Nagaland.

Forty-five participants, including Community Conserved Area (CCA) committee members and Self-Help Group (SHG) representatives from Akhoya, Unger, Changtongya Old, and Nukshiyim villages, took part in the program. The team was led by Lipokinla Pongen, Forest Conservation and Outreach Manager, alongside Talimeren Ao, Convergence Expert, and Forester Imemakok.

The group first visited the State Agriculture Research Station (SARS) in Yisemyong, where Agriculture Officer Longham Phom provided an overview of the department’s initiatives and conducted a theoretical session on vermicomposting. Participants then toured the research fields, observing the cultivation of millets, Chinese cabbage, broccoli, and Azolla, an aquatic fern used as livestock feed and biofertilizer. The visit also included demonstrations of paddy and orchard farming, coffee cultivation, and organic composting techniques.

Later, the team visited Merakum Tzuin (Nagar Van) in Yimchalu, a former jhum area now transformed into an urban nature park. Assistant Commissioner Shreyansee Jain and Divisional Forest Officer Sentitula Pongen interacted with the villagers, discussing conservation efforts and community needs. The visit concluded with a shared lunch.

The exposure trip provided hands-on experience in sustainable agriculture and conservation, equipping participants with knowledge to enhance biodiversity management and farming practices in their communities.
