Mon DIET centre located about 200 meters above Mon town with a cluster of modern buildings, black-topped roads up to the porticos, a healthy compound, a volley ball court and a breathtaking view of the town, seems to be the best centre in Nagaland. The outer lining of the center creates a perfect picture of an ideal and perfect place of such purpose. But a closer inspection reveals the true colors of its reality.
Through an interview with the students (trainee teachers) and the Acting In-Charge, it is learned that classes started in August, a month late. On being queried on the number of lecturers, it was found that there are 5 lecturers for 49 students but currently only one lecturer is on maternity leave leaving only 4 for such enormous workload; their subjects being 11 altogether for the two year course. Besides, there is practically no third and fourth grade staff which, regretfully, compels the other teaching staff to sometimes perform the work III/IV Grade staff as well. Moreover, there is no water pipe connection and proper electricity supply which bars the smooth functioning of computer-related practical classes.
Commenting on the shortage of teaching staff, the Acting In-Charge said that there is an urgent need for “a lecturer per subject since the course includes math, science, English etc and all of them are virtually vast but due to technical problems in the higher hierarchy all anointment of lecturers are painstakingly slow”. It was confirmed that the 1st Batch lecturers waited 10 months while the 2nd batch waited 5 months for appointment by the Nagaland Public Services Commission (NPSC). “The delay in arrangement and appointment of the lecturers has caused the shortage of lecturers in the center” the In-Charge said. Predicting the effects of these problems he said “we may have to cancel both internal and external examinations because we will not have completed the courses by that time if the situation does not improve” he lamented. While accepting the inadequacies of things in its initial stages, the Acting In-Charge and the students are not too unhappy for the loss of two months but they will not tolerate this farce any longer, they warned. Meanwhile the Konyak Students Union (KSU) is shocked over this and assured that it will take up the matter and rectify it as soon as possible.
