Sangphure village celebrated Mongmong festival at the village ground with Yangseo, public leader, as cultural chief guest on September 2.
Yangseo in his address asked the gathering to take one’s culture and traditions seriously saying they are the only ones that distinguish a community from the others. In festival like this, we have to learn folk songs and folk lore, he added, asking the young people to make use of the opportunity.
The chief guest further asked the villagers to take part in electoral process with clean election in mind. Meanwhile, he advised to put head and hands together for the progress of the area and the community. Sangphure village being one of the oldest villages in the area has bigger role to play for the development of the area, he added.
Yangseo also elaborated on the significance of Mongmong. He lamented that these days many young people do not know the significance of the festival and are simply enjoying with “unwanted things”. In this, he asked the youngsters gathered to celebrate the festival in true spirit of sharing of blessing.
At the celebration, cultural dance was presented by Tizise Cultural Club, MSS Sangphure and Furu Thsukhi by Lenathsi.
Other highlights of the programme were bamboo string song, marriage proposal display, salt making, blacksmithing, fortune telling, head hunting display, top spinning, millet harvest and jhum field clearing song.
