Monsoon rain triggers landslides, snap road links in NE

Morung Express News Dimapur | August 26 Incessant rains triggered landslides in the states of Manipur and Mizoram which has snapped road links and numerous buildings buried under. In Manipur, incessant rainfall since Thursday night triggered landslide on NH 39 cutting off the lifeline of the state. The landslide which occurred today at Makhan area in Senapati district damaged 80-feet of the Imphal-Dimapur NH-39, a senior police officer said told PTI news Agency. Dozens of trucks bringing essential commodities from Nagaland and those heading towards Assam from here have been stranded due to the landslide, it said. However, the Newmai News Network reported that the landslide was reportedly cleared late in the afternoon. Incessant rainfall since last night was responsible for the landslide. Local volunteers and police personnel were seen supplying drinking water and other eatable items to the stranded passengers at the landslide area before it was cleared, it said. Meanwhile, torrential rains have caused flash floods in several parts of Imphal town and other law lying areas disrupting traffic movement today. Water level has gone up in major rivers in Imphal. The state government has taken up all sorts of measure in this regard. In a statement, Under secretary of Relief and Disaster Management, Bidyarani Ayekpam said that as per the weather forecast of the Indian Meteorological Department heavy to very heavy rainfall measuring 115.6-204.6 mm is likely to occur in most places in the state during the next 72 hours. The deputy commissioners are advised to take necessary steps to mitigate the impending flood situation in the state and make the 24×7 district control room operational to attend distress call from the public, it said. In Mizoram, at least seven buildings, including a church, collapsed in Aizawl and nearby villages due to multiple landslides triggered by heavy rains since Thursday. Many places of the state remained cut off due to road blocks caused by landslides, PTI reported A three-storied building collapsed at Lengpui village near Aizawl on Thursday night and six buildings, including a church, were buried under a massive landslide at nearby Phunchawng village, officials said. Champhai district, bordering Myanmar, was cut off from Aizawl as landslides blocked the Aizawl-Champhai road at various places while the road link from Aizawl to south Mizoram's Lunglei district via Thenzawl also snapped due to at least six landslides. Many roads in several parts of Aizawl, including at Tuikual North locality, were blocked due to landslides and work was on to clear the roads. Assam: Brahmaputra flowing below red mark Meanwhile in Assam, the flood situation improved considerably on Friday with waters of the Brahmaputra River and many of its tributaries flowing below the red mark, even as seven districts in the state were still inundated. Around 2.67 lakh people in 472 villages of the state are still affected by the deluge. Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Barpeta, Chirang, Morigaon, Nagaon and Golaghat districts are flood- hit, an Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) report said. Nearly 36,000 hectares of farmland are still inundated, it said, adding only the Dhansiri River at Numaligarh in Golaghat is flowing above the danger level. With people returning to their homes, only 62 relief camps were operating in Lakhimpur, Morigaon, Chirang and Nagaon districts where 25,253 people were taking shelter. There were reports that roads in Jorhat district, a bridge in Morigaon and a school in Dibrugarh district have been damaged. The third wave of the devastating flood has so far claimed the lives of 72 persons across Assam. In total, 156 people have died in this year's flood-related incidents in the state.
