Kohima | July 24
Seeing the plight of the commuters and having concern for the road safety on the ongoing four Lane road construction between Dimapur and Kohima, K.G.Kenye, M.P (Rajya Sabha) has written an open letter to Union Minister of Road Transport on July 13 last.
Kenye stated that the Dimapur to Kohima Highway is being upgraded under the NHAI/NHIDCL scheme. The concern department has awarded the work to various private contractors and “we are glad that the work is presently in full swing.”
He stated that the earth work and the rock cutting work for the widening of the road is also underway. However, with the onset of Monsoon the road is muddy and slippery. Many people like me who travel regularly on this highway appreciate the up-gradation works being undertaken but the disappointing situation with regard to road safety has let us all down.
The Highways construction work –zone and traffic control codes as per procedures laid down by MORTH is nowhere to be seen. Many sections of the road are dug up with no warning indicators. Some portions do not even have the traffic diversion barricades that can be visible to vehicles in rain or at night. This has made the ever present risk for vehicle drivers even more hazardous.
Kenye made a plea to the union minister to instruct the departments and the contractors to take necessary traffic related construction site procedures and precaution so that the commuters are not put at risk of accidents.
