An old kutcha house at Etsutchukha Colony in Wokha town was damaged after a mudslide hit the area in the early hours of August 7 amid incessant rainfall.
The house, belonging to Wochamo Ngullie and located along NH-2 (formerly NH-61), was occupied by a family. However, the occupants were away on summer vacation when the incident occurred, averting what could have been a serious mishap.
Residents said a vehicle parked along the roadside also slipped during the downpour, although it did not hit the house. Local volunteers who rushed to the site helped move the vehicle to safety.
Nongothung Ngullie, who lives directly below the affected site, said the mudslide occurred at around 3:50 am.
The affected area was later inspected by officials from the Wokha district administration, who took stock of the damage and the safety situation.
In another rain-related disruption, multiple mudslides were reported in Elumyo and Humtso villages on Friday following heavy rainfall the previous night.
The mudslides completely blocked the road to Elumyo, leaving the village cut off from the district headquarters. The disruption has particularly raised concerns over access to medical care and the movement of essential commodities.
Residents in the affected areas have been urged to remain cautious as rainfall continues, particularly around vulnerable and landslide-prone stretches.
