Naga civil society commits not to waver

Dimapur, May 31 (MExN): The Government of the Peoples Republic of Nagalim has pointed out that Naga civil society had given their own commitment “not to waver under any circumstances, till the forces that had antagonized the Nagas are brought to its knees”. A press note issued by the MIP quoted several of the leaders representing civil society in this regard. According to the MIP, the Naga Hoho President Keviletuo made clear his conscience when he said, “no room to live with the Meiteis as a family, no more to be together”.

“Despite criticism we shall stand our ground” he declared. Similarly NSF President Mutsikhoyo Yhobu minced no words when he said the NSF shall stand by its long standing commitment to unify the Nagas for the glory of the Nagas.

Coordinating Committee for Naga Civil Societies (CCNCS) Convenor Mr.Neingulo Krome also said that “the volatile situation has gone beyond economic blockade”, giving the indication that the Nagas are not going to rest and will go on exploring every option. Artax Shimray, Convenor of the UNC Co-ordinating Committee likewise expressed concern on how the Manipur government is subjugating the non-locals in Manipur valley in collaboration with the Revolutionary People’s Front, forcing them to quit the valley in thousands. “Is the Government of India willing to listen?”

The MIP note stated that “notwithstanding the unsavory comments on the volatile situation as brought by the Manipur Government the Naga people’s attachment to the issue is revealing in the manner the nation demanded”. The MIP informed that on 29th May when the Naga civil society groups met at Viswema to take stock of the situation “they voiced their conscience vociferously to give unfailing support to NSCN General Secretary Th. Muivah as he challenged the Nagas to take the Naga issue to its logical conclusion”. “Taking a strong stand the Naga societies expressed their readiness to face the reckless opposition to their historical and political rights”, the MIP stated.

The Convenor of Naga Parliamentarians Forum and former MP Charanamei who led a seven member team to the consultative meeting at Viswema gave reason why the forum was formed and why the seven Naga MLAs resigned from the Manipur Legislative Assembly, it was stated. While fully acknowledging the leadership of Muivah, Charanamei according to the MIP said “when the ADC election issue was already at its boiling point the program of Muivah’s visit to his native place came up. But when the despicable act of terrorism was started on 6th May 31, 2010 at Mao Gate their conscience was greatly disturbed and hurt”.

The former MP was also at pain to point out that Manipur Chief Minister Ibobi made a fool of the Centre’s direction when he passed a Cabinet Resolution to ban Muivah’s entry to Manipur when he was in fact asked to go back to make necessary arrangement for Muivah’s safe passage.” “This hurts us very much” Charanamei said. To compound their hurt feeling after violence was perpetrated against the Naga women folks by the Manipur Police Commandos no Manipur-based political parties exercised the courtesy to visit the victims and the displaced persons, rather they focused only in condemning the Muivah’s visit to Somdal, he added.

“When the political leaders failed to understand the Naga issue and acted in selfish manner we cannot sit quiet but to form a forum through which we can talk to anyone willing to understand us and also lobby with the government of India” he said. He further said that they were shocked when the Manipur Commandos were not replaced by Para-military forces at Mao Gate and other vulnerable places as assured by Union Home Secretary Gk Pillai, Chief Secretary of Manipur and GOC,57 Mountain Division.
