Dimapur, September 24 (MExN): The Naga Hoho will honor late Naga National Council (NNC) leader Late Imkongmeren. Acknowledging his immense sacrifice and contribution to the Naga cause, the Naga Hoho said to have resolved to “initiate and help build an ‘Imkongmeren memorial’ in his burial place at Longkum village.
The Naga Hoho took the decision “to take befitting measures to recognize the contribution” of Late Imkongmeren, during its recently concluded 4th federal assembly.
Imkongmeren, born in Longkhum village in Mokokchung, in 1900 spent his lifetime serving the Naga people till he breathed his last on January 16, 1979, the Naga Hoho stated. The organization issued a note today.
“He was elected president of the Ao Tribal Council, and it was then during his term in office that the world war came to an end in 1945.As a leader he played a major role in the post war reconstruction. On behalf of the Ao Tribal Council and as member of the Naga Club, he played a leading role in constituting the NNC from the Naga Club in 1946.From then on he took active part in uniting the Nagas under the banner of NNC.”
Further, the Naga Hoho said, Imkongmeren was appointed the vice-president of NNC in 1950 and rendered yeoman services to the Naga cause when Phizo was based in London.
“While serving in this capacity on many occasions he was hunted for imprisonment and his house confiscated by the government agencies. Both he and his family lived without a home ‘for many years.’ He was arrested in 1974 by the Indian military and subsequently released ‘unconditionally’ in 1976,” the organization said.
