DIMAPUR: The United Naga Council delegates led by its President, Puni Modoli will be meeting Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Thursday according to information received. The 25 member delegation consisting of Naga tribal leaders from Manipur had earlier met Sonia Gandhi, Chairperson of UPA and President of the Congress Party, Shivraj Patil, Home Minister, Pranab Mukherji, Defence Minister and Oscar Fernandes, Minister of State (Independent Charge), Statistics and Programme implementation, who is also the Head of Group of Ministers (GoMs) for the Indo-Naga political talks.
They will also meet L.K. Advani, Leader of the Opposition Party and A.B. Bardhan, General Secretary of CPI.
The UNC Leaders had categorically stated with the leadership in New Delhi that unification of all Naga areas is the first step towards final political settlement between the Government of India and the Nagas.
“The Nagas had impressed upon the GoI the necessity of expediting the political talks for early political solution to avoid any future violence and counter-violence in the Northeast region”, UNC President Puni Modoli stated in a press communiqué.
The UNC’s move at this crucial juncture comes against the backdrop of the next round of talk slated to be held on 16-17 December 2005 in Bangkok, Thailand.
The United Naga Council will also be organizing a Press Conference on 16th December at Press Club of India, Raisina Road, at 3 pm.
