‘Naga people ignorant about Intellectual Property Rights’

Kohima, March 3: “In the Nagaland context, it appears that our people are still quite ignorant about the wide ranging impact of Intellectual Property Rights in our day to day lives,” said K D Vizo, ITS Commissioner Secretary, IT & Communication.

He was addressing the one-day workshop on Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) organized by the National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT), Kohima was held on March 3 at NIELIT Auditorium.

The resource person for the workshop was Professor Manas Sanyal, HOD, Department of HRM, Bengal Engineering and Science University who spoke on the topic, ‘Introduction to Patents and IPR.’ Professor Sanyal briefed the participants on IPR, the need for IPR and the legislative measures of IPR where he also asserted that the protection of IPR encourages innovation and safeguards intellectual creations. KD Vizo spoke on how IPR has become essential even to a remote state like Nagaland with the arrival of globalisation. With our skills in music, literature and cultural activities, IPR has to be obtained to protect such skills and innovations. In his welcome address T P Singh, Director, NIELIT Kohima stated that NIELIT organized the workshop to spread awareness among the mass who are still ignorant of IPR. An introduction to IPR was briefed by Surendra Nath, Director, MSTECH. The workshop was followed by an interactive discussion and distribution of certificates.

IPR refers to the protection of an individual’s invention such as designs, layout, copyrights, trademarks.
