Dimapur, August 29 (MExN): Naga Women Hoho Dimapur, highlighting the various difficulties being faced by local women vegetable vendors in and around Dimapur, has approached the Dimapur Municipal Council for redress for the same and also demanded allocation of new stalls at the New Market.
While acknowledging the DMC for its efforts “to keep Dimapur modern, clean and peaceful place for everyone” the Hoho called for more attention to the plight of the vendors facing problems from being “hunted and evicted” to confiscation of goods, to proper locations for trade. A letter addressed to the Chairman of Dimapur Municipal Council highlighted the following points:
1. That the local women vegetable vendors are common ordinary folks who survive “hand to mouth.”
2. They deal with perishable commodities which require a market frequented by all with easy accessibility for the populace of the town.
3. That they deal with local products which are “cherish by all”.
4. “From the statistic point of view it is indeed disheartening not to see any local vendors in a vital market like new market”.
5. That a permanent shed for local women vegetable vendors be alloted as suggested earlier by the Hoho.
6. “In an attempt to give momentum towards both main markets i.e, New Market and Super Market, they may be allotted equal permanent sheds in respective market”.
7. “NWHD also feels that it is unhygienic as well as an eye-sore to sell second-hand clothes side by side with eatable items.”
The Hoho also took cognizance that the vendors in the New market are being “hunted and evicted every now and then” and in some cases that even their goods were confiscated by the authorities.
“That sir, it is observed that the present scenario with regard to the local women vegetable vendors needs due consideration from your office. The NWHD at this juncture would like to point out that the matter relating to the local women vegetables can be best understood by us, as the NWHD is the apex body to cater to the need of women’s community as well as address their grievances” continued the letter. Standing on these factors, the NWHD requested the DMC to consider the plight of local women vegetables vendors and address their grievances by allotting vegetable stalls within the New Market.
