A late-night brawl turned into tragedy when a youth killed a fellow Naga by stabbing him at New Delhi yesterday. The identity of the deceased has been confirmed as Avi Kulnu, a post graduate student from Dehradun, who had come to the capital in search of a job.
The accused, Albert Ezung, is under custody of the police after he initially took refuge in his sister’s home, subsequent to his committing the homicide. Avi and Albert were friends and flat-mates.
According to sources, a slight scuffle led to the unwarranted scene. Albert was reportedly watching TV while others in the flat were making merry by singing songs. Disturbed, he approached his friends to stop the sounds, which in turn led to an angry exchange of words. When Avi tried to intervene, Albert punched him in the face. Things took on a heated course from then with both friends attempting to garner support from others.
In the presence of eyewitnesses, Albert is said to have stabbed his friend with a knife twice. Friends, who initially thought the two were grappling, changed their expressions into seriousness after they saw blood oozing out of Avi’s stomach. Alcohol had a role to play. “Had they not been drunk, things would not have turned out this way,” a reliable source said.
Avi succumbed to injuries on the way to a hospital. His body will be brought home to Nagaland tomorrow.
Commenting on the incident, Naga Students’ Union Delhi president, Theja, said, “Let the law take its own course of action”. She said that the whole incident was a quarrel among friends that went out of control, leading to the unfortunate incident.
She expressed her happiness that the NSUD is receiving co-operation from different sides and Naga communities residing in Delhi. Nonetheless, she expressed her shock at the unfortunate incident and said that it is a loss for everyone. “It is a shock indeed, because it is a big loss for everyone.”
