Nagaland AH&VS cautions on ‘African Swine Fever’ outbreak

Areas bordering Assam and Arunachal Pradesh requested to remain vigil

 

Kohima, May 18 (MExN): The Department of AH and Veterinary Services, Government of Nagaland  Additional Director and HoD, AH & Veterinary Services, Dr Budhi Lama has informed that ‘ban on import of pigs’ into Nagaland has been enforced since April 29 due to outbreak of ‘African Swine Fever’ disease in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.
In this regards, the village functionaries, public, consumers of Nagaland especially district of Dimapur, Wokha, Mon, Longleng and Peren which are bordering Assam and Arunachal Pradesh have been requested to remain vigil and refrain from importing or smuggled live pigs and pork cuts from Assam and Arunachal Pradesh as ‘African Swine Fever’ disease is highly infectious with very high mortality rate upto 100%.


Dr Lama said that “At present, treatment and vaccine are not available and the only option is to cull, humane slaughter and dispose the pig. It can wipe out the entire pig population in the outbreak area, colony, village and district etc causing huge economic loses.”


“Accordingly, this information is issued for public awareness and dissemination,” Dr Lama added.
