Nagaland aims to curb NCDs through early screening

‘Access to Care Nagaland: A Wellness Initiative’ launched

Commissioner & Secretary of Health and Family Welfare, Anoop Khinchi, IAS has remarked on the growing burden of lifestyle-related diseases in Nagaland.

He was speaking at the event of the initiative titled “Access to Care Nagaland: A Wellness Initiative” at De Oriental Grand, Kohima on May 8. 

The new health programme is aimed at enhancing early detection and prevention of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) which is a joint effort by Doctors For You (DFY) and Siemens Healthineers in collaboration with State National Programme for Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases (NP-NCD) Cell, Department of Health & Family Welfare.  

He described the initiative as crucial and important to sensitize people to reversing adverse lifestyle and raise awareness among the populace to address the burden faced by this region. 

The Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Programme is said to be dedicated to the screening of NCDs and capacity building of healthcare providers in Nagaland especially in underserved regions. 

The Commissioner pointed out the affects that NCDs have on human lives in the long run which are also a cause of premature deaths noting that detection, screening and treatment of NCDs play an important part in the region. 

He said, “This programme will serve as a catalyst in making preventive healthcare more accessible to communities. Early detection not only saves lives but also lowers treatment expenses, supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).”

CSR Head of Siemens Healthineers Shwetanjali Kumari speaking at the event expressed how the company is dedicated to improving healthcare in remote areas. 

He commented that the programme is not just a project or investive an initiative to ‘invest’ in the well-being of the present and future generations. 

Dr Shefali Agarwal, Director (Strategy & Transformation) at Doctors for You pointed out that the project underscores a collective responsibility to serve vulnerable populations. Agarwal affirmed that the goal of DFY is to ensure equitable access to quality healthcare for all. 

Under Secretary of the Investment and Development Authority of Nagaland (IDAN), I Changsang spoke about how non communicable diseases are silent killers. He opined that early intervention is vital and highlighted the importance of multi-sector collaboration in strengthening healthcare systems and service across the state.

Joint Director and State Programme Officer (NP-NCD) Dr Alemwabang Aier chaired the event and outlined the project’s objectives, scope, and anticipated outcomes.  

Nilutpal Das, Medical Officer, welcomed participants and pointed out the pressing need to bridge healthcare disparities in rural Nagaland. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Chief Medical Officer, Kohima Dr Leamnyei Konyak.
