Ruing the lack of local entrepreneurship, economic independence and industry interface in the state, Governor PB Acharya opined that Nagaland is like ‘BIMARU’ states.

Coined in 1980s, it is the acronym formed from the first letters of the names of the states of Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh clubbed together for their relatively poor economic conditions.

“We are a BIMARU state,” maintained Acharya during a meeting with editors and media representatives at the Editor’s Meet, organised at Raj Bhavan on August 10.

“Outsider cannot make Nagaland economically independent. Only local initiative can bring about such scenario, he noted calling for engendering such mind-set among the Nagas. “Without entrepreneurship, Nagas cannot become economically independent.”

As a result, the Governor implied that those at the helm of affairs are ‘less concerned about what is happening in the state and always running after funds.’

He, however, viewed that while such actions are needed, the state should find ways to generate own revenue.

CSR – Citizen’s Social Responsibility

Besides, Acharya asserted that there is a need to develop the other underdeveloped districts in the State as well. “There is a need to strengthen the health, education and infrastructure sectors so as to improve the social conditions and economy,” he said further calling for financial inclusion in these areas. “Private school should open up branches in border areas and strengthen their participation in empowering the education of the State,” he stated.

Meanwhile, the Governor batted another form of “CSR – Citizen Social Responsibility” which he implied is about socially responsible to the plight of others and fellow human beings in need.

Likewise, he noted that every labour laws are neglected in Nagaland, citing the instances of the workers from outside who involved in various road projects.

They are being kept under distressing conditions, Acharya said that he had raised the issue with concerned authority and managed to secure arrangement for some of them to buy essential through public distribution system.

The government need to the violation of labour laws, he noted. Highlight these issues and since there is a strong opposition in the state presently, they will discuss it in the Assembly, he urged the gathering.
