Peren, May 16 (MExN): The Peren District Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PDCCI) has expressed full support for the Confederation of Nagaland Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CNCCI)’s decision to enforce an indefinite business shutdown across nine districts of Nagaland, beginning May 19.
PDCCI President, Haizin Mpom and Secretary, Irangbui in a press release stated that this collective stand comes in light of the state government’s continued neglect of the business community’s longstanding demand for representation in Urban Local Bodies (ULBs). “Despite persistent representations and constructive engagements, the government has failed to demonstrate the political will to resolve this pressing concern.”
PDCCI stated that the absence of the business sector, a major contributor to the state’s economic fabric, in decision-making bodies such as ULBs is both undemocratic and unjustifiable.
As a stakeholder directly affected by this exclusion, PDCCI reiterated that the call for representation is not rooted in personal ambition, but in the broader interest of participatory governance. “Businesses play a vital role in local economic development, and it is only fitting that our voices be heard and respected within statutory civic institutions.”
PDCCI has appealed to the citizens, local organisations and civil society bodies within and out of Peren district to extend full cooperation and understanding during the period of shutdown. “This is a peaceful and principled protest, intended to restore equity and inclusiveness in local governance.”
“While we remain hopeful for a timely and positive response from the department concern, the public is advised to plan ahead and make necessary arrangements for essential items in case the shutdown continues for an extended period. This is purely a precautionary suggestion to minimize inconvenience, and not otherwise,” PDCCI stated.
While expressing regret for “temporary hardship this may cause”, PDCCI has asked for the public’s support in ensuring a smooth and dignified observance of the shutdown. The PDCCI said it remains committed to upholding democratic values, and urged the government to reconsider its stance with sincerity, in the greater interest of justice, and inclusive development.
