Nagaland CM launches digitization of old birth and death certificates

CM Dr Neiphiu Rio along with the officials of the Department of Economics & Statistics at the CM official chamber, Kohima on January 31.

Kohima, January 31 (MExN): Nagaland Chief Minister Dr Neiphiu Rio on Saturday launched the digitisation of old manual birth and death certificates. The event, held at the CM’s official chamber in Kohima was attended by senior officials including Akunu S Meyase, IAS, Secretary to the Government of Nagaland, Department of Economics & Statistic and Neidilhou Keditsu, Director, Economics & Statistics.

In his address, Dr Rio emphasised that the initiative will streamline service delivery, ensure efficient and accurate data, improve citizen access to essential documents, and assist the Government in making informed public policy decisions, according to a DIPR report.

He commended the department's efforts and urged citizens to ensure timely registration of births and deaths.

The move follows a directive from the Office of the Registrar General of India (ORGI) under the Union Home Ministry. The state department had introduced online registration for births and deaths starting April 2022. “This initiative marks a significant step toward modernizing vital records management and ensuring greater efficiency and accessibility for citizens.”

With the new system, the issuance of manual certificates will soon be discontinued as the state transitions to 100% online registration and digitisation of legacy records. This would streamline processes, reduce paperwork, and provide faster and more reliable services.

The digitization of old manual certificates is essential to ensure that all records are seamlessly integrated into the new online system, thereby safeguarding their authenticity and accessibility for future use, the department stated. It clarified that only genuine certificates issued by the registrar of births and deaths and information available in the record can be digitalized.

The public has been requested to utilise the ORGI portal (dc.crsorgi.gov.in) to access the facility and help build a comprehensive and secure database of vital records for Nagaland.
