Two bridges of crucial importance were opened to traffic in Nagaland commercial capital Dimapur on December 21. The bridges over the Chathe at Diphupar, 4th Mile, connecting NH 29 with Niuland and one over the Dhansiri at Kuda village (formerly known as Full Nagarjan) were inaugurated by the Deputy Chief Minister Y Patton.

Construction of the two new bridges started in October 2017 with a construction period of 18 months.

The erstwhile single lane bailey bridge over the Chathe, constructed in the late 1980s, collapsed in July 2017 claiming 4 lives. The same month the British era bridge over the Dhansiri was closed to vehicular traffic after it developed cracks on the deck, which was attributed to a sinking foundation pillar. It was opened to vehicular traffic after repairs while work on the replacement bridge continued.

Patton, who also holds charge of the Roads & Bridges Department, described the bridges as of great importance.

According to him, Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio insisted that the bridges be opened to traffic, by any means, before Christmas.
