Nagaland DoHFW stresses community action to combat Dengue

National Dengue Day 2025 observed at the CMO conference hall, Kohima on May 16.

Kohima, May 17 (MExN): National Dengue Day 2025 under the theme “Check, Clean, Cover: Steps to Defeat Dengue” was observed at the CMO conference hall, Kohima on May 16. The programme was organised by the State, National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP), Directorate of Health & Family Welfare in collaboration with Kohima district, Chief Medical officers office. 

The programme was observed to intensify preventive activities ahead of the monsoon on vector control and active community participation and intersectoral coordination throughout the transmission season (pre-monsoon to post-monsoon), stated an update received here. 

Dr Neisakho Kere, Joint Director & SPO (NVBDCP) DoHFW speaking on the occasion, shared the present scenario of Dengue in Nagaland, the 2023 dengue outbreak, the actions taken to curb the same. For adult mosquito, Aedes Aegypti control, fogging was carried out to kill the infected mosquitoes that are present in the affected colonies after due verification of presence of vectors and their density. The vegetation around the houses was removed to prevent any mosquitoes from resting.  For personal protection, advocated the regular use of mosquito net, screening of doors and windows, wearing of protective clothing during peak mosquito biting time, use of mosquito repellent, advised to avoid visiting the affected areas and patients if avoidable, and to sleep under a mosquito net (LLIN) to avoid mosquito bite and spread the virus further.

Hospitals were advice to create dengue ward to avoid transmission. Anti Larval measures-Observed 1 dry day a week, during which the communities removed the containers, tires, plant pots and pits filling etc. Larvicidal activities included domestic breeding checkers, to cover water containers.

Intensive IEC/BCC activities were carried out through TV, Radio, newspapers, social Medias and print Medias for Dengue control and preventions.  He concluded by saying that unlike other diseases, control and prevention of Dengue can be achieved with wide involvement of public/private practitioners, different NGOs and Allied government departments. 

Earlier the programme, keynote address was delivered by Dr Tinurenla Anichari. Deputy Director, NVBDCP, DoHFW wherein she emphasised on the importance of preventive measures as there is no specific cure for Dengue.  Multi-sectoral approach to healthy environment, active engagement of local authorities & communities crucial in minimizing Aedes breeding and reduce risk of transmission. 

Dr Leamnyei Konyak. CMO, Kohima, in his welcome address shared that the National Dengue Day has been observed every year on May 16 since 2016. The programme was chaired by Dr Kevilhulie Meyase, DPO CD-1 Kohima and concluded with a vote of thanks by Tiatemsu Ozukum, AMO, DVBO Kohima.
