Dimapur, September 24 (MExN): According to the Ministry of Human Resource Development report, Nagaland is faced with acute shortage of teachers with B.Ed degrees. This was informed by the Vice Chancellor of Nagaland University Professor K Kanan today. Kanan, who was speaking at the 18th foundations day of Eastern Christian College in Dimapur said the problem prevails across the country; but in Nagaland it is acute.
Kanan opined that the poor system of marking in Nagaland has been the biggest factor responsible. He said poor marking has been a big deterrent for students as well as teachers in pursuing higher education. “Most teachers have not been able to pursue B.Ed degrees due to low marks,” he pointed out; adding that while outsiders has attained B.Ed degrees from Nagaland and are doing well in their respective places, teachers here are not eligible to pursue a degree. Kanan said further that colleges in Nagaland should wake up and stop running institutions merely for profit. He said many colleges in Nagaland have now become a money making institutions. He added it has been learnt that many lecturers in the State are teaching in more than one college due to poor salary. He urged college managements to be transparent and employ lesser teachers for better salary. He urged college managements not to dilute their teachers.
Kanan, who also inaugurated a new building for the commerce stream in the college, said he was happy to be part of the new section. He said the performance of the college is reflecting in the increasing number of students over the years. He suggested opening courses in B.Ed in the college in future. He said B.Ed degrees will improves the quality of education in the state to a large extent. He assured full support to the uplift of the institution as long as his tenure remains. Kanan also challenges students to build up on their strengths. He said Naga people are blesses with numerous talents but instead of harnessing it they imitate outsiders. “We are still living with a middle class mentality…Nagas need to build on their strength rather than exposing their weaknesses,” Kanan said.
Guest of honour, Dr. Atola, Additional Director of Higher Education department also encouraged students to invest in time wisely. She said time management is very essential in a students’ life. She underscored the need for students to be abreast with the changes taking place around them in order to compete with the rest of the world. She hoped the college would continue to impart quality education to the students and wished them all the success.
