Nagaland Govt reiterates ban on dog trade 

Kohima, July 20 (MExN): The Central Government, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare has enacted the Food Safety & Standards Act 2006 and the Food Safety & Standards (Food Products standards and Food Addictives) Regulation 2011, to regulate the safety of food articles safe for human consumption.


The FSSAI Regulations 2011, an animal belonging to any of the species specified: Ovines, Caprines, Suillines, and Bovines and includes poultry and fish. The slaughter of any other species other than the ones listed of the Regulation is not permissible under the FSS Act and Regulation. 


Reiterating the ban on dog trade in Nagaland, the State Government on Monday stated that “for strict compliance of the FSS Act and Regulation and in order to regulate the safety of food articles safe for human consumption, it is necessary to ban slaughter and sale of dog meat in the State of Nagaland.”


A statement received from the DIPR on July 20 stated that in consonance with the provision of the FSS Act and Regulation, commercial import and trading of dogs and dog markets and commercial sale of dog meat in markets and dine in restaurants are banned with immediate effect. 


It also stated that any person found violating this order shall be liable to be punished under section 428 and 429 of the Indian Penal Code 1860 and section 11 of the prevention of cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 and any such other provisions of law as may be applicable. This shall be enforced by the District Administration, Police, Municipal Administration and the Veterinary clinic & Animal Husbandry department severally as well as jointly.


“This is issued in pursuance to the approval of the cabinet vide memorandum No.CAB-2/2013, dated July 4, 2020,” it added.
