Nagaland HSLC & HSSLC results: Girls outdo boys yet again

Girls have yet again outdone the boys in the Nagaland Board of School Education’s (NBSE) Board exams 2020 with the former holding edge over the latter in most categories. 


The NBSE declared the results for High School Leaving Certificate Examinations (HSLC) and Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate Examinations (HSSLC) for 2020 on Saturday.


For HSLC (Class 10), a total of 8470 girls and 7210 boys emerged successful. However out of 55 candidates in the first twenty merit list, there were 39 girls and 16 boys.


The result of HSSLC exams (Class 12) also showed similar trends, with girls edging pass the boys in most categories, except in Commerce stream where the latter’s pass percentage was slightly higher.    


In Arts streams, girls pass percentage stood at 77.24% and boys at 65.51%. For Science stream, the girls’ pass percentage was as high as 90.03% as against 75.07% for boys. However, in Commerce stream, boys did better with 68.99% while girls were at 66.44%.


Girls further dominated the top-10 list with girls taking 13 slots in the Arts stream while the boys took 3 slots. In the Commerce stream, 8 girls took 8 slots while the boys managed 4 slots. In the Science stream too, the girls had a slight edge over boys with a 6-5 ratio.

 

Overall pass percentage 
Overall, the NBSE informed this year’s HSLC result saw marked improvement in pass percentage at when compared to two previous results. 


 Out of 22392 enrolled candidates, a total of 15680 qualified the examination with a qualified percentage of 70.03% as against 68.29% in 2019 and 66.01% in 2018.


In HSSLC, the overall pass percentage in Arts stream was 71.87%, 75.47% Commerce and 80.99% for Science. 


The results indicate a slight decline in the Arts and Science streams which respectively recorded 74.44% and 81.37% last year, NBSE said. The Commerce stream however showed an improvement as compared to 2019’s overall pass percentage of 74.68%.

 

Best and worst performers 
In class 10 exams, a total of 96 schools secured 100% qualified/pass percentage. Out of this, 83 are private schools and 13 are government schools. 


However, the trend of zero/nil result continued this year with 34 schools – 30 government and private, failing to open account. 


On a brighter note, the NBSE informed that the pass percentage of government schools saw a marked improvement from previous years, increasing from as low as 32.81% in 2016 to 47.40% in 2020. 

 

District wise  results
In terms of district wise performance for government schools, Kohima district again topped the table with a percentage of 64% followed by Mokokchung and Peren districts at 57%. Longleng district is at the bottom with 10%. In respect of private schools, Kohima district took the top spot with a percentage of 89% followed by Mokokchung at 88% and Phek at 87%.


986 candidates secured 80% and above in aggregate out of which, 11 candidates are from government schools.


 In HSSLC, this year, two toppers - one in the Arts stream and the other in Commerce, were from Government Higher Secondary Schools, in Jotsoma and Kohima.


8 institutions under Arts stream, 6 institutions under Science stream and 5 institutions under Commerce stream secured 100% pass result in the HSSLC examination.


The HSLC and HSSLC Examinations 2019 were held from February 13-March 4 and a total of 37854 candidates were enrolled for the two examinations.
