Kohima, August 13 (MExN): The Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT) led by M Ramachandrudu, IAS, Joint Secretary (DM-II), Ministry of Home Affairs, has assured all possible assistance for restoration of damage caused by landslides, flash floods and floods in Nagaland, following ground visits to affected areas in Mon, Mokokchung and Longleng districts.
The team, constituted to assess the damage and requirements arising from the 2026 monsoon disasters, visited affected locations in the districts to verify the ground situation and extent of damage.
In Mon, the team visited the landslide-affected areas at Defence Colony, Thamnan Ward and adjoining areas on August 13, accompanied by the district administration, Superintendent of Police and representatives of the Konyak Union, Konyak Students’ Union and Konyak Nyupuh Sheko Khong.
Speaking during the visit, Advisor, Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA), Z Nyusietho Nyuthe, said the July 19 incident was unfortunate and stated that both the State and Central governments were concerned about the situation and looking towards precautionary measures for the future.
Ramachandrudu said the team had witnessed the damage and losses suffered by the people and assured that all possible assistance would be taken to restore the damaged areas.
The team was also briefed on the disaster situation in Mon, where continuous heavy rainfall triggered floods and landslides at several locations, damaging roads, bridges and public infrastructure and disrupting connectivity to several villages.
A presentation highlighted the impact of incessant rainfall on July 19-20, which triggered landslides and flash floods across Mon district, resulting in loss of life, destruction of homes, agricultural losses and blockage of critical arterial routes.
In Mokokchung, the IMCT visited disaster-affected areas in Tuli Sub-Division on August 12 following a briefing by the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) at Tuliyong Community Hall.
Nodal Officer, DDMA Mokokchung, Temsuwangshi Jamir, presented an assessment of disasters reported in the district during 2026.
Advisor, Fisheries & Aquatic Resources A Panjung Jamir and Advisor NSDMA Nyuthe also attended the session, which included an interaction between the IMCT, district administration and other officials.
The subsequent field visit to disaster-affected areas in Tuli Sub-Division enabled the team to assess the ground situation and verify the damage reported by the district administration.
In Longleng, the team undertook field assessment following a briefing on the disaster situation in Longleng and Tuensang. The district administration had highlighted extensive damage to major roads and inter-village connectivity, which had virtually cut off Longleng from the rest of the State and disrupted movement of people, essential commodities, relief materials and emergency services.
Joint CEO, NSDMA, Dr Jhonny Ruangmei, said the destruction of surface connectivity in Longleng had acted as a “multiplier of disaster”, affecting access to essential commodities and disrupting the overall response mechanism.
He said Indian Air Force helicopters had been deployed for weeks to evacuate stranded people, including more than 100 students, elderly persons and sick patients from the district headquarters, Tamlu and Namsang.
Ruangmei also stressed the need for future-ready and resilient infrastructure, noting the need to consider whether infrastructure being built today could withstand future disasters.
As per the State DIPR, Ramachandrudu said the IMCT had toured different parts of Nagaland and witnessed the damage caused by landslides to houses, roads and people. He assured that necessary measures would be taken at the earliest to restore normalcy in the affected areas.
