Nagaland inches towards the New Year with 243 active cases, tally at 11,917

Dimapur, December 29 (MExN): Nagaland reported 6 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday out of which 5 were from Dimapur and 1 from Kohima.

On the other hand, 6 previously COVID-19 patients recovered from the disease in the last 24 hours, according to the daily bulletin issued by the state Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme.

With this, the total number of infections now stands at 11,917 out of which 11,464 have recovered and 243 are active cases.

As per the bulletin, 219 active cases are asymptomatic, 16 mild, 3 are moderate on oxygen, 1 severe on oxygen and 4 cases are in Critical-ICU on ventilator.

District-wise, Dimapur has the highest number of active cases at 96, Kohima has 82, Mokokchung has 45, Peren 8, Kiphire 6 while Mon and Phek have 3 active cases each. As on December 29, there are no active cases in Longleng, Tuensang, Wokha and Zunheboto districts.

A total of 131 cases are said to have migrated to other states.

Segregated data of cases

Among the total infections in the state, 41% or 4,862 cases were attributed to traced contacts—the highest among the four categories of classification. This was followed by armed forces/ security personnel which made up 39 % or 4,653 of the total cases. 

While the first COVID-19 cases in the state were first detected among returnees, the tally of cases among returnees and travellers now stands at 15% or 1,836. A total of 566 cases or 5% of the cases were detected among front line workers.

Nagaland’s COVID-19 timeline: The status so far 

Nagaland officially registered its first COVID-19 cases after three people who returned from Chennai tested positive for the virus. The returnees, mostly students and workers, arrived on the first Shramik special train carrying over 1,469 people which arrived at Dimapur Railway Station on May 22. They started their journey from Chennai on May 19.

However, earlier on April 22, a patient from Dimapur tested positive in Gauhati Medical College and Hospital but the case was migrated to Assam. 

On June 6, Nagaland’s caseload reached 100 cases; 12 days after the first cases were detected. Coincidentally, the state officially recorded its first COVID-19 recoveries on the same day when 8 patients were declared free of the virus.

Thereafter, 57 days after the detection of first cases, Nagaland logged its first 1,000 cases on July 20. It took the state 176 days to reach the 10,000 threshold on November 16.

According to the ‘Report on the Inter-State Movement of Stranded Persons’ released by the State Government on December 4, during the May-July 2020 period, 34 special buses, 12 Shramik special trains covering 1,02,555 kms in 28 days, managed to bring back 13,594 returnees to Nagaland.  The State also created history by arranging the Shramik special trains covering the longest train route of 4322 kms in India, during that period. 

COVID-19 fatalities

The state reported its first COVID-19 fatalities when an elderly patient, who died at the COVID-19 Hospital, Dimapur on July 24, and a woman from Assam, who was found dead at a paid quarantine centre on July 22, were confirmed as COVID-19 positive on July 24.

As of December 29, Nagaland has also recorded a total of 79 deaths out of which 10 were classified as ‘not COVID related.’ Currently, there are no deaths under investigation by the State COVID-19 Death Review Committee.
