Nagaland joins call to promote safe and responsible internet use

Kohima, February 11 (MExN): The State-level awareness workshop on ‘Safer Internet Day’ under the global theme ‘together for a better internet’ was observed at the Directorate of Information Technology & Communication, Kohima on February 11.

Commissioner & Secretary, Information Technology & Communication, Mohammed Ali Shihab, IAS in his speech said that the initiative awareness about cyber hygiene is to take the correct measures to protect and ensure a safer usage of internet, stated a DIPR report.

He pointed out that “in our state, many take to their mobiles phones during their leisure time as there are limited recreation facilities” and reasoned that “this has led our state to high usage of internet while comparing with other states in the country.”

Therefore, he called upon all participants to spread the awareness, about cyber hygiene, online safety practices and the responsibility use of the internet in any platform so that the public are not cheated or face treats as the internet has now become an essential item for everyone.

State Informatics Officer, NIC, I Lanusangkum Aier in his introductory address said that everyone today is aware of all the happenings around the globe through newspapers or online, as there are many opportunities, options and ways and means to get this information to move forward. He shared that since information are made available today through the public domain which could be informative, destructive, healthy or addictive one should know which information needs to be contented and which to be shared. He also highlighted about the frauds and scams through internet and shared how it can be secured, and called upon all to use the internet judicially, safely with responsibility so that we are not affected. 

Director, Information Technology & Communication, Er Sabou Yashu in his welcome address said that the Safer Internet Day is observed worldwide on the second Tuesday of every February to raise awareness, promote safe and responsible use of internet which is maintained by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. He asked all the HODs to take the programme seriously and become ambassadors to create awareness on safety measures on use of internet.

Kohima: In observance of Safer Internet Day, the NIC Kohima District Centre, under the ISEA Project, organised an awareness workshop at the Deputy Commissioner's office, Kohima on February 11.

Speaking at the event, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Kohima, Rhosietho Nguori, NCS emphasised the importance of responsible internet usage, especially within government offices. He highlighted the risks associated with negligence, which could compromise entire office systems, and urged employees to adhere to cybersecurity protocols. He reminded the participants that NIC internet usage is monitored by the Cyber Security Cell, India, and stressed the importance of installing antivirus software.

During the workshop, NIC Kohima conducted a PowerPoint presentation to educate participants on various aspects of cyber safety. The session covered key topics such as Common cyber threats and their impact, Cyber hygiene practices to minimize risks, Human errors that can lead to security breaches, Best practices for a safer online experience, Reporting mechanisms for cybercrime and others.

Mokokchung: Mokokchung celebrated Safer Internet Day at the DC’s Conference Hall, Mokokchung on February 11.

The programme highlighted the importance of utilizing internet safely and gave insights on Cyber Crime like, fraudulent emails, SMS and voice phishing by the team NIC, Mokokchung.

They also encouraged making use of helpline number 1930 and www.cybercrime.gov.in to file for complaints.

The programme was chaired by Er Lanusenla Longkumer, Principal, ICIT, Mokokchung   followed by introductory remarks by Er Temsuwathi, Senior Director (IT) NIC, Mokokchung and short speech by Temsuchuba, SDO Civil, Mokokchung.
