Nagaland: Kohima-Dimapur road partially restored for traffic

Stranded trucks released on trial basis

Kohima | July 19 Our correspondent The Kohima – Dimapur road (NH-69) which was completely cut off more than ten days was restored on Wednesday night and stranded trucks were released on trial basis after 8 pm onwards.   Hundred of trucks loaded with essential items were seen passing through the stretch of road this morning.  

Both up and down vehicles were allowed to pass through side by side, allowing one way traffic at a time. Alongside, machineries were kept ready to repair the road when depression of soil took place.  

R. Temsu Temjen, Chief Engineer, PWD National Highways said the administration, traffic police along with the department had a discussion and released the stranded up vehicles after 8 pm onwards.  

On the stability of road, he said the whole areas of road from top to bottom is not stable and cannot assure the stability of these areas. The level of road has been raised to 10-15 feet’s above the existing road and the soil is not very stable.  

The Chief Engineer however said the department will do its best to stabilize the road condition and restore the road fully at the earliest.  

He also said repairing a stretch of National Highway 29 at Lower Para Medical area, Kohima, was not an easy task work as most of the stretch of road is not stable due to loose soil and water logging beneath. The stretch of road was completely cut off on July 8 last and the road went down some 10ft below the actual road level.  

As a result, the department has compelled to cut the road through some portion of private land and houses above the damaged highway.  

Meanwhile, a press release from the PRO, Kohima Police stated that vehicles on a trial run along the partially restored.  

The portion of NH 29 between Kohima and Dimapur below Avile Petrol Pump has been partially restored and is now open for traffic with immediate effect, it said.  

The Kohima Police, however, stated that traffic will be regulated for smooth passage on both sides and travelers are requested to bear with the inconvenience.
