Opium worth Rs 7 lakhs seized Kohima, September 17 (MExN): Kohima Police personnel manning the Phesama police check gate while conducting routine frisking of vehicles detected 6½ kgs (7 packets) of suspected opium wrapped in polythene and concealed inside a trolley bag. One person identified as Sushil Kumar Kannoujia was arrested and a regular case vide Kohima South P.S under the NDPS Act is registered, a press release from the Kohima Police PRO informed. LOU-DHEP general meeting held Wokha, September 17 (MExN): A general meeting of Land Owners’ Union, Doyang Hydro Electric Project (LOU-DHEP) was held on September 14 at NRC Hall Doyang to discuss matters on important perennial issues and agendas. The meeting was attended by the 14 affected villages, a press release from the LOU- DHEP stated. Among others, Lotha Hoho President and Advisor, Mhao Humtsoe and E.T. Patton, were present during the meeting. Humtsoe exhorted the gathering to uphold the DHE Project in the spirit of “welfare for all” and further urged them to extend and support pro-life ventures and developmental activities. Bona fide members expressed their opinions on various issues and witnessed “history” when the house unanimously resolved to reaffirm the validity of the election held on the May 14, 2014 and further agreed to support the present LOU-DHEP executive members led by R. Shansha Waknyu declared as ‘biodiversity area’ Mon, September 17 (MExN): Wanching Village Council declared Shansha Waknyu area as a biodiversity area from September 15, earmarking it for further protection of flora and fauna in the region. Realizing the importance of preservation of flora and fauna, the Wanching Village Council of Mon adopted a resolution to safeguard and protect the wildlife and flora species. The resolution was adopted earlier on September 5 in the presence of the Wanching Village Council, villagers and the Naginimora Forest Department. The area was declared protected from September 15. The declaration ensures that no hunting or logging would be allowed in this area. Punishment would be strictly enforced on any violator. A fine of five thousand rupees and additional punishment as deemed fit by the Village Council would be imposed on the violators as per the resolution. Awareness would also be created in the village so that people realize the importance of safeguarding nature’s glory. The declaration has been submitted immediately to the DFO, Mon Forest Division for further improving the collaboration between the Village Council and Department of Forests Environment and Climate Change so that this area may be considered as a Community Conserved Area. A press note stated that the Forest Department welcomes such a move by the Wanching Village Council and hopes that more and villages come forward in saving natural wealth of Nagaland for the future generations to come. NSCN (IM) Sumi National Workers appeal to Sumi Hoho Dimapur, September 17 (MExN): The Sumi National Workers of the NSCN (IM) have appealed to the Sumi Hoho to “reconsider” their decision to dissociate from the Naga Hoho. A press release from Convenor, Sumi National Workers Welfare, and Kilonser, Ceasefire Monitoring Cell, G Tokishe Swu, informed that Sumi National Workers held a meeting on September 17 and seriously deliberated on the issue of Sumi Hoho dissociating from the Naga Hoho “while the Nagas are working hard for unity and integration of all the Nagas”. In this regard, the Sumi National Workers “earnestly” appealed to the Sumi Hoho to reconsider the decision “for the larger interests of all the Nagas.”
