The Nagaland State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NSCDRC) organised an awareness programme on Consumer Rights at multi cultural hall, Zunheboto on May 25.

Retired Judge and President, Nagaland State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, Justice S Hukato Swu while giving the introductory address spoke on number of issues relating to consumers and how people are exploited as consumers. He encouraged the attendance to get acquainted with one consumer rights and come forward to file consumer cases in the districts. This, he underscored was in order to deliver justice to all section of people. 

The NSCDRC President also highlighted the legal provision or rights mandated under the Consumer Protection Act and how people can be accessible to the rights. Further, Swu also encouraged to be vigilance in receiving the goods and services available.

Resource person, advocate Sunjib Rana while dwelling on E-Commerce, Liabilities and Mediation Act, 2023 spoke on the electronic commerce facilities available and also on mediation which is an Alternative disputes resolution mechanism meted upon parties through the help of professional mediators and can be disposed off. 

Advocate Apila Sangtam spoke on overview of the Consumer Protection Act 2019 and highlighted on the functioning of the district forum, state forum and national forum and the penalties under the act. Sangtam informed that there are three tier grievances Redressal forum such as District Consumer Forum, State Consumer Forum, National Consumer Forum and on pecuniary jurisdiction. She also emphasised on the remedies available under the act. 

Sentiyanger spoke on Medical Negligence in the context of Consumers Right and gave details on the medical negligence as defined under the said act. He also emphasised on the compensation available in this act. 

Earlier, Phuleto Yeptho, District & Session Judge gave the welcome address. 

The participants comprised of Government Higher Secondary School students and women organisation. Altogether about 500 participants participated in the awareness programme. The programme was chaired by Easter Yepthomi, Retainer Lawyer, Zunheboto District Legal Services Authority.
