Kohima | October 21
Nagaland today joined the Nation in observing Police Commemoration Day by conducting a ceremonial parade at Police New Reserve Phesama.
Floral tributes were paid to the 383 police personnel who had sacrificed their lives for the security and safety of the country during the period from September 1, 2016 to August 31, 2017.
“They are no more with us but they have left their noble deeds as example. May their soul rest in peace,” were the words inscribed in the cenotaph set up in memory of the martyrs.
Exhorting the police personnel on the occasion, Director General of Police (DGP) Nagaland, L L Doungel called upon them to be prepared to give their best in the service of the people. He also read out the roll of honour of the 383 personnel. No personnel from Nagaland police died while on duty during this period.
The DGP recalled that October 21 every year is observed as Police Commemoration Day across the country as a mark of respect to the brave police martyrs who had laid down their lives.
The history of the day traces back to October 21, 1959, when a patrol CRPF, led by SI Karam Singh, was ambushed by the Chinese forces at Hot springs Ladakh and 10 jawans were killed, he said.
On 21st October 1959, Chinese Army personnel opened fire and threw grenades at the police party of 20 personnel. Ten of them attained martyrdom, seven were taken prisoners by the Chinese and the remaining managed to escape.
During the Annual Conference of Inspectors General of Police of States and Union Territories held in January 1960, it was decided that October 21 will be observed as Commemoration Day throughout the country to mark the memory of these gallant personnel and all other Police personnel who have laid down their lives on duty.
