Nagaland: Over 2,19,000 unorganised workers registered on e-Shram portal

Assistant Labour Commissioner, Kohima, Zaremo Kikon, today said that Nagaland State has registered about 2,19,000 persons under the e-Shram portal, a National Database of Unorganized Workers (NDUW), till May 2023. Out of which 26,300 informal/unorganised workers were from Kohima district. 

He said this while delivering the keynote address on the occasion of International Domestic Workers Day under the theme ‘Recognise decent work for domestic workers for their social protection and sustainable development,’ organized by Centre for Development Initiatives (CDI), Guwahati at Francis Hall, Kohima on June 16. 

He however said only about 2000 workers in the unorganised sector have registered in the Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Maandhan Yojana (PMSYMY), a voluntary pension scheme providing Rs 3000 monthly pension to unorganized workers at age of 60 years. 

Kikon apprised the gathering that the amendment and the draft on the policy for Child labourers unorganized workers is said to be in the process by the government and once it is amended, lots of regulations will fall into place. 

The speaker also said domestic work for women was one of the oldest occupations while adding that they remain among the most vulnerable section of the society. 

Kikon said there were 76 million domestic workers and 76% were women and emphasized on making decent work for domestic workers.

Earlier, Ferrando Domestic Workers Alliance (FDWA) Coordinator, Sr Rincy Kamei, in her welcome address said that Kohima had about 928 domestic workers and 209 identified child workers registered under FDWA. While encouraging DWs to come forward for registration, she lamented that many were unwilling to come forward for registration and avail benefits for them. 

Coordinator, CDI, Bokali Kasho, presented a memorandum to the Chief Minister and the Department of Labour for the inclusion of Domestic workers under the schedule of employment and fixation of minimum wage for domestic workers for the state of Nagaland.

The sharing was presented by DW, Kevilenuo Veswu, and Words of encouragement were delivered by President, Angami Catholic Association, SFS church.
