Nagaland plant trees on World Environment Day

Dimapur, June 5 (MExN): Through out the World June 5 is observed as World Environment Day or WED ‘to stimulate and create more awareness with regard to protecting our environment and highlighting its importance for the very survival of human being on this planet.’ The Nagaland state forest department had declared 2010 as the “Year of Tree Plantation for Carbon Mitigation” and Minister for Forest, Ecology, Environment and Wildlife & Excise M.C. Konyak has informed that the department would be undertaking plantation programmes in different parts of the state all throughout the year. Accordingly, different educational institutions, organisations, unions etc observed WED by organising tree plantation drive under the theme ‘Many Species, one planet, one future.’

ASUK: The Ao Students’ Union, Kohima (ASUK) has made a change of the WED by organizing a cleanliness drive and Tree Plantation under the Theme “Towards cleaner and Greener Kohima” in view of their year long Golden Jubilee celebration which falls on October 2. Gracing the occasion, Minister for Forest, Ecology, Environment and Wildlife & Excise M.C. Konyak said that tree plantation is more important than cleaning though it is required at the same time. While highlighting the importance of tree plantation, the Minister said to save the existing forests; more trees are to be planted in the whole state, and save the environment from further deterioration, and to tackle global warming. Also present on the occasion, Dr. Nicky Kire, MLA & Chairman NKVIB said that it is not ‘one man’ job but everybody should be involved to make Kohima cleaner and cleaner and make Kohima beautiful.

16 Assam Rifles: The 16 Assam Rifles under aegis of Headquarters 5 Sector Assam Rifles of Headquarter Inspector General Assam Rifles (North) joined hands with the ASUK in observing WED.  Forest minister M. C. Konyak who launched the event was joined by MLA Dr. Nicky Kire, MLA Nuklotashi, Dr. Benjing joint director, Horticulture Dept, Tongpang L Jamir, President ASUK and Col G S Ahluwalia, SM, Comdt 16 AR to plant an ornamental tree each at Tamang Park. Brig Ved Prakash, Cdr HQ 5 Sector delivered the message. A total of 1800 saplings of different varieties were planted.

Cross Road Club, (Mopungchuket): The members Cross Road Club of Mopungchuket Baptist Church Youth Department on the occasion of WED, planted trees and conducted cleanliness drive, distributed hand made paper bags to all the shops to replaced bulletin bags. To create the awareness in saving Mother Earth, several pamphlets were pasted bearing slogan like “Stop! Stop! Stop!  Killing animals” “Plant trees; save earth”  “Keep your clean and Green”. Cross Road Banneret, Moanaro in a press release said that the club comprises of age groups between 19-23 years. Altogether 12 members took part in the programme.

4th NAP battalion, Thizama: The 4th NAP battalion, Thizama planted more than 2000 varied species of plants including fruits and ornamental trees led by the commandant, officers and other ranks of the unit. The tree saplings were provided by the forest department and silviculture department. Forest personnel under Chiephobozou range were also present during the plantation.

NAP training centre, Chumu: NAP training centre, Chumukedima, did its bit today to save the environment by planting tress and cleaning surroundings. Over 2,000 police personnel from the 11/13/14 NAP (IR) battalions, police central workshop, police central store, police engineering project and the police medical wing, took part in the plantation drive, where they planted more than 1,000 number of tress. The police personnel also carried out a sanitation drive around the entire NAPTC campus.  

The Challengers: ‘The Challengers’ with the youth members of Signal and Merali Dimapur Ao Baptist Church commemorated WED under the theme ‘Save Our Planet Earth – Plant Trees.’ Concentrating on public places, the group has planted 200 ornamental trees of different kinds in the D.C Office Complex, the Signal and Merali Ao Baptist Church compound, Signal Angami village area and Discipleship Bible College. The activities were carried out to create awareness on Climate Change; as well as to encourage our people, especially young ones to have loving attitude toward the nature. ‘The Challengers’ is multi-facet non-profitable organization started in the year 2005 under the leadership of Kilang Longkumer. Meanwhile, the Discipleship Bible College in a press release issued by the Principal,  Rev.Dr.Nuklu Longkumer informed that ‘The Challenger’ planted 50 ornamental trees in the college campus such good works shall always remain and be remembered in the days to come. “Let this good work continue to create awareness about the climate change and to maintain ecological balance,” the Principal added.

Unity College: The Unity College, Dimapur observed WED at the College campus by organising environment related competition on poster, painting, cartoon, essay and quiz. Eight teams participated in the quiz where team Rhino emerged the winner and essay competition on the topic role of students in environment awareness was won by Paukindiliu. The College principal in a press release informed that later a plantation drive was held at the college campus.

DRCB: The Dhansiri River Control Board (DRCB) observed WED by planting tress to prevent soil erosion at Dhansiri River Bank behind Urban Haat, Dimapur. This was stated in a press release issued by the Board Joint Secretary Edento Kiba.

Balijan Hindi English School: With the sustainable effort and enthusiasm mode to change the climatic condition, the Balijan Hindi English School, Karbi Anglong (Assam) marked the WED in the School campus under the theme ‘Let’s protect our planet the Earth.’ The students carried out social work and planted trees in the school campus.

CSU: The Chakhesang Students’ Union (CSU) has informed that a week long of total plantation will be held from June 6 to 12, 2010 within the whole of Chakhesang jurisdiction. CSU, President, Esther Rhakho in a press release informed that the concern affiliated units have been entrusted with the full responsibility of observing the same within its own unit’s jurisdiction. While also asking the unit to submit a clear report on the observation to the office of the CSU with which the Union will identify the best five units for necessary awards and acknowledgment at the end of the year. KHE: The Kyong Hungjantaren Ekhung (KHE) Wokha in collaboration with the Department of Forest, Wokha, Nagaland Beekeeping & Honey Mission (Land Resources Development), Kohima; Don Bosco Alumni Association Wokha Unit and Green Foundation celebrated the WED with Er. W. Kithan, Parliamentary Secretary for Prisons & Home Guards, Emergency & Fire Services as the special guest at Don Bosco Youth Center, Wokha. Kithan officially launched the ‘Year of Plantation’ followed by distribution of tree saplings by the Department of Forests where over 2000 saplings were distributed to the public. The winners of the essay competition are all from GHSS, Wokha including Jimmy Lotha, Zubenthung Ezung and Chibeni Odyuo respectively. It was held earlier on June 4on the topic ‘Bees for economic and environmental benefits’ sponsored by Nagaland Beekeeping & Honey Mission (NBHM). Meanwhile eco-friendly T-Shirts were given to the winners by Supongnukshi Ao, DFO, Wokha and certificates to the winners and all the participants by KHE Chairman. Finally the KHE Environment & Health Secretary; Dr A.Yanrenthung Jami proposed the vote of thanks.

DMHSSS: The Dimapur Mission Higher Secondary School (DMHSS) organized a tree plantation programme today at Christian Institute of Health & Science Research Hospital, Dimapur in commemoration of the World Environment day.  It was organized as a part of year long silver jubilee celebration of the school in co-ordination with the District Forest Officer and the Hospital authority of the CIHSR. The plantation was done collectively with the full participation of the School Governing Board members, teachers and students. The program started with a word of gratitude from Dr. Viu, Senior Consultant, on behalf of the Hospital Authority and the DFO Dimapur, Kocha Meyasie  exhorted the students and Dr.Moa Imsong, Counsellor pronounced the invocation. In a brief wind-up service of the plantation program in the Hospital premises, the school Governing Board member and the Convenor of the School Jubilee Planning Committee, K. Temjen Jamir highlighted the significance of the WED and encouraged the students to take care of our mother earth in making a greener planet as human cannot live without trees not vice versa. He also thanked the Hospital Authority, Forest Department and all the participants for making the program success. It may be noted that the Dimapur Mission Higher Secondary School is run by the Dimapur Ao Baptist Church.
